Description
During the second French invasion of Portugal, in the early 19th century, the inhabitants of what is now the municipality of Boticas, fearing the looting of the invading troops, decided to hide their most valuable possessions. Among them was wine, which was buried in the cellars to prevent it from being discovered.
Some time later, when they returned to retrieve what they had hidden, they realised that the wine had undergone an unexpected transformation: it had a low alcohol content and a slight presence of gas, the result of a natural fermentation process that occurred while it was buried.
Because it was kept underground, this wine became known as “Vinho dos Mortos” (Wine of the Dead), becoming a curious tradition of the region and a testament to local history.
